双极细胞（bipolar cells）是连接视细胞和节细胞的纵向联络神经元，胞体位于内核层。外侧的树突伸入外网层，与视细胞内侧突形成突触；内侧的轴突伸入内网层，与节细胞的树突形成突触。双极细胞可分两类：一类为侏儒双极细胞，其树突只与一个视锥细胞形成突触，其轴突也只与一个节细胞的树突建立突触；另一类双极细胞的树突可与多个视锥细胞或视杆细胞形成突触。
