转基因技术中将苏云紫杆菌产生抗虫蛋白的基因转入棉花中，使该基因在棉花中表达，合成原毒素蛋白。当害虫吃下这种蛋白并将其消化水解为较小的多肽就激活了原毒素，原毒素通过与害虫消化道上的特殊受体发生特异性结合，从而破坏消化道薄壁细胞或与消化腺产生的水解酶发生特异性结合使其失效这两种途径来阻碍害虫消化吸收营养以至于害虫不能正常发育，起到抗虫效果。
