原始土壤是指从岩石被生物定居或着生开始，到高等植物定居之前所形成的仅能满足低等植物繁衍的薄层土壤。原始土壤形成过程是土壤形成过程的起始点，与以物理风化作用占主导地位的岩石风化过程相伴进行。事实上，原始土壤与碎屑风化壳相随，其特点是土层薄，土壤剖面未形成，土体含有高含量的岩屑，还未具备支撑高等植物生长的条件，仅能生长低等植物和微生物。
