“印”的意思是决定无疑。“印可”即认可、许可的意思。佛教一般用“三法印”即三种决定之义判别佛法还是“外道”：诸行无常、诸法无我和涅槃寂静。教外别传的禅宗则以“直指人心、顿悟成佛”的“心印”来印可学人（可见参见“心心相印”条）。在佛经上常能见到，弟子的言行是否正确，需要由佛来印可。如《维摩诘经·弟子品》：“若能如是宴坐者，佛所印可。”在禅门，学人是否开悟，亦由禅师印可。如《五灯会元》卷十：“初不喻旨，后因阅《华严》感悟，承眼（法眼文益禅师）印可。”佛或祖师在印可弟子、学人时，常称“如是如是，如汝所说”，故宋·苏轼有诗云：“印可聊须答如是”（《次韵王定国南迁见寄》诗）。
