卡那霉素是一种蛋白质生物合成抑制剂，通过与30S核糖体结合从而致使mRNA密码误读。若细菌中产生一种破坏卡那霉素的酶，则可变为抗性株。卡那霉素抗性的质粒经常被作为选择基因或标记基因用于分子克隆中。 它可以用于口服和静脉注射，对多种病菌感染有效，从卡那霉素链霉菌（Streptomyces kanamyceticus）中分离得到。
选用350mg/L的羧苄青霉素（Cb）作为抑菌抗生素；25mg/L的卡那霉素（Kan）作为筛选抗生素；PCR以及RT-PCR检测和荧光定量检测证明，基因已经成功的导入和整合到火焰南天竹基因组中。
