单向传递（unidirectional transmission）：在单根神经纤维上，兴奋是可以双向传导的，而在中枢内兴奋传布只能由传入神经元向传出神经元的方向进行，而不能逆向传布，称为单向传递。这种单向传递是由突触传递的特性所决定的。因为脊椎动物，尤其是哺乳类的中枢神经系统内的突触，绝大多数为化学性突触，其突触后膜不具备电兴奋性，动作电流不能使其兴奋，突触的传递要靠突触前末梢释放的化学递质作用于突触后膜，使突触后神经元兴奋，这样兴奋才能从前一神经元传至后一神经元。故不能逆向传布。
