半焦是泥煤、褐煤和高挥发分的烟煤等经低温（500～700℃）干馏得到的固体产物。 由于不粘结煤干馏时不软化熔融， 仅脱去部分挥发分， 因此有时将由不粘结煤低温干馏制得的固体产物称作干馏炭，以区别于由粘结煤低温干馏，经软化、粘结得到的固体产物。
