北大西洋的北赤道洋流出现在北纬15度至北纬20度附近,向东流进墨西哥湾,称为墨西哥湾流,又简称湾流(Gulf Stream)。此外,南赤道洋流在南美洲圣洛克岬(Cape Sao Rogue)分流,有一部分水流也会沿着南美洲的东北角经加勒比海,注入墨西哥湾。因湾流是由南北赤道洋流所合并而成,故其温度和湿度特别高,流速大,对沿岸气候影响特别明显。这支洋流沿着美国东岸北流,称为北大西洋洋流。
