北仑区以其境内的深水港――北仑港而得名，北仑区位于浙江省东部，宁波市境东部。东部峙头洋面与普陀县交界；南部梅山港洋面与舟山市普陀区、鄞州区交界；西部自甬江至象山港洋面与鄞州区接壤，陆地边界线勘定全长44千米；北部金塘洋面与定海区交接（大榭岛的行政区划界仍属北仑区）。东西长52千米，南北宽29千米。总面积823平方千米。北仑区有7个街道，2个镇，1个乡，有户籍人口38万人，居住人口近90万人。
