剪胀是指在法向应力作用下沿着具有一定粗糙度的裂面剪切时所产生的膨胀。这是由于结构面或软弱层两壁不可能十分光滑，剪切面也不可能很平整而产生的膨胀现象。对于破碎结构物充填的裂面和夹层，在剪切过程中，由于破碎颗粒受剪发生转动也可引起剪胀现象。此外，在完整岩石进行三轴试验，当应力超过大约1/4试件强度时，随应力的增长，试件开始减少体积压缩变形，并趋向大于前一加载时的体积，即随应力的增大产生负的体积应变。这一现象亦称为剪胀。它是在进行岩体弹塑性力学分析时应加以考虑的问题。
