前藏、后藏、纳里是吐蕃本部的三部。 元代明朝的乌思藏就是前后藏。清以后乌思译作卫，乌思藏称为卫藏。 明朝先后设置乌思藏、朵甘（其机构为朵甘卫）两个 “卫指挥使司”和“俄力思军民元帅府”，分别管理前后藏、昌都（朵甘）和阿里地区的军政事务。 昌都区域称为朵甘、喀木。藏北的霍尔三十九族是另个板块（和硕特汗国时期及其以后一个时期）。 清雍正年间划康部宁静山以东地归四川省，以西与卫部合并称前藏，藏部称后藏。
