刺果树为乔木，成熟期高约5-12米；枝嫩时有柔毛，不久毛会消失；树叶为革质，卵状披针形或椭圆形，叶基部阔楔形或圆钝，树叶两面都无毛，干后呈红褐色，很有光泽感；花为雌雄异株，苞片为卵形，花盘坛状，边缘波状，子房近球形，长很密的暗黄色毛；蒴果近球形，具3个分果爿，有毛；种子近卵球形，呈黑色很光滑。花期10-12月，果期翌年1-3月。产于亚洲多个国家，中国主要产于云南，主要生长于海拔600-700米山地或平坝常绿林或次生林中。
俗称“洋辣子”，果树、行道树和林木害虫，刺蛾科。
