日本佛寺内的职位名称。为掌管一山寺务的长官。系自奈良朝以来所设的职官，以天平胜宝四年（752）良辨担任东大寺别当为始。其后，兴福、元兴、大安、药师、西大、法隆、弘福、四天王、崇福等亦设别当之职。就中，东大寺别当之部属，有从僧、沙弥及童子各二人，其他诸寺别当则各设从僧一人、沙弥一人、童子二人。任期为四年（贞观十三年时，871年），然亦有连任者。
