初级生产者，是指能利用二氧化碳、水和营养物质，通过光合作用固定太阳能，合成有机物质的绿色生物。例如，生态系统中的绿色植物，能够通过光合作用把太阳能转化为化学能，把无机物转化为有机物，不仅供给自身的发育生长，也为其他生物提供物质和能量，在生态系统中居于最重要地位。自养生物在生态系统中都是生产者，是生态系统的主要成分。在普通的生态系统中，具有光合成能力的绿色植物（包括微生物）占绝大多数，由于它们担负着大部分的有机物生产，所以大多只把绿色植物称为生产者。
