刀背，指刀上没有刃的一边。刀背镂空设计主要功能，1.为了减轻刀身重量而又不能让刀性能下降太多。为了减轻重量，刀身其他地方不能修改，因此就只能在刀背上打主意，移去一部分物料。如此既不影响刀姿。又能达到减轻刀的重量之目的。2在古代，许多刀是没有刀鞘的。镂空的部分比较方便于悬挂和携带。
