刀兵是古代的一个重要的兵种，以刀为主战武器。刀兵手持的刀种类很多，有单手刀、双手刀、双刀。单手刀可装备盾牌，使刀兵能对弓箭、弩矢有一定免疫作用；双手刀威力较大，近身时可砍断对方长矛等长兵器的木杆。刀兵的克星是重骑兵，即使是训练有素的长刀方阵，面对敌精锐骑兵的猛烈冲击，也是凶多吉少的。
