凉伞位于新晃县西南。1953年至1955年设凉伞镇。1956年改为乡。1958年9月，撤乡建立人民公社。1984年3月改公社为乡。2000年，经省民政厅批准撤乡设镇，2001年经省民委批准为首批民族团结示范点，是湘黔两省5县10乡镇的重要结合部及民族贸易中心和物资集散地。全镇有17个村，188个组。总面积99.86平方公里，有耕地16533亩。1989。主要经营农产品、农具、食品加工和商业、服务业。主要特产有油菜、玉米、马铃薯、凉伞猪、凉伞豆腐等。
