佛陀制禁比丘啖食生之草、菜、瓜果等，必以火烧煮，或以刀、爪甲等除其皮核而后食之，称为净食。（参阅‘净法’47010 净食是利用一段时间的饮食控制，让消化功能暂时停止，把代谢作用完全放到排泄上，使身体内的废物毒素排出体外，达到洁净身体的目的。在净食期间，可以由外补充和适宜的天然营养液结合物并运用组织内储存的营养，来维持生命健康。
