冷中子（cold neutron）是指动能为毫电子伏量级或更低量级的中子 能量小于0.005电子伏（波 长大于4埃）。在常温慢化剂的正常反应堆的中子谱中，冷中子所占份额仅2%左右。为获得高强度的冷中子，在反应堆的反射层中安装载有低温的慢化剂，如液氢容器，用以降低局部区域中子温度，这种冷源可使冷中子份额增大1—2个量级。
