冰斗是一种三面环以峭壁、呈半圆形剧场形状或圆椅状的洼地。雪线附近山坡下凹部分多年积雪斑边缘的岩石因冻融作用频繁而崩坍为岩屑,并在重力作用与融雪径流共同作用下搬运到低处,使积雪斑后缘、雪斑下的地面则逐渐蚀低成为洼地即雪蚀洼地。积雪演化为冰川冰后,冰川对底床的刨蚀作用使洼地加深,并在前方造成坡向相反的岩槛,同时后缘陡壁受冰川刨蚀作用而后退变高,从而形成冰斗。
