内丹是以阴阳变化丶天人合一思想为指导，以人体为鼎炉，精气神为药物，注重周天火候炼药，而在体内凝练结丹的修习。内丹是宋代至现代主流的修行方式，主张内炼成丹（内丹），外用成法（雷法）。宋代之前，多以外丹及服食为主要修炼方式。方仙道丶阴阳家丶道家中，由以方仙道更重外丹服食。以神丹丶神药成道者，在文献中多有记载。自唐末，外丹成道者几不可闻，而内丹开始兴起。但其成者几无。从轩辕黄帝求道于广成子记载算起，内丹有着五千年的渊源。丹道祖经丹道的发源，是非常早的事。《周易参同契》、《悟真篇》、《列子》、《苏东坡集》、《内业》、《心术》、《楚辞·远游》以及黄老学派作品可是说是所有丹经必本的祖经，后世一切丹经均从其中发挥而来，一直是内丹法诀的纲要。内丹一词常见于道教。如道教全真派便是以修内丹而闻名天下。
