共轭函数亦称对偶函数、极化函数，函数的某种对偶变换。设f为实线性空间X上的扩充实值函数，X*为X的某个对偶空间，即由X上的一些线性函数所构成的实空间，那么f的共轭函数f*是X*上的扩充实值函数。共轭函数的概念在研究极值问题的对偶理论中起着本质作用。19世纪，法国数学家勒让德首先在力学中引进类似的概念，那是把速度变为动量的变换，对于力学方程来说，这就使得拉格朗日方程变为哈密顿方程。今天，人们就称这样的变换为勒让德变换，勒让德变换的概念实际上出现得比对偶空间或共轭空间的概念还要早，应该说，后一概念的起源之一就是勒让德变换。20世纪50年代，芬切尔又把勒让德变换进一步抽象为共轭函数的概念，因此，今天人们又把函数到其共轭函数的变换称为勒让德-芬切尔变换。
