共振态（resonance）是指一类强子的统称。研究原子核的散射和反应过程中就发现共振现象。表现为当入射粒子能量取某确定值时，散射 或反应的截面迅速增大，截面值随能量的变化行为和经典物理学中熟知的共振现象一致。通过量子力学的分析研究表明，这个共振现象的出现是由于在该能量附近，入射粒子与原子核结合成一个亚稳复合核，经过一定时间后又衰变成末态粒子。这个被看作是入射粒子与原子核复合而成的亚稳复合核就被称为共振态。这样最初建立的共振态观念的含义是亚稳复合粒子。
