免耕(保存耕耘 no-tillage)一词的原意是保护性耕作制度，主要目的是防止土壤侵蚀。1977年以前，用最小耕作（最小的耕耘）来表述目的在于减少对田地耕作踏压次数的耕作措施。1977年美国农业部土壤保护局将最小耕作更名为免耕，并将其定义为：一种不翻动表土，并全年在土壤表面留下足以保护土壤的作物残茬的耕作方式。其类型包括不耕、条耕、根茬覆盖及其他不翻动表土的耕作措施。1984年土壤保护局再次修改免耕的定义，将所有耕作措施分为三类：免耕、少耕、常规耕作。
