光动力作用首先须有受作用的物质，即基质。可以是正常或异常的结构中的一些主要生物物质，也可以是细胞代谢产物甚至氧化形成的毒性物质；主要是蛋白质、酶和核酸等生物大分子及其组成的氨基酸和碱基等。对光动力作用敏感的是蛋白质的侧链二硫键，而核酸内则以鸟嘌呤最敏感，氨基酸中则以芳香氨基酸敏感。可是氨基酸内只有色氨酸、酪氨酸、组氨酸、蛋氨酸及半胱氨酸等才是对光动力作用敏感的物质。
所以光动力作用过程中所产生的单线态氧分子可以亚细胞特异性地调控细胞功能。
