元宝枫属于槭树科、槭树属，落叶乔木，高8～10m；树皮纵裂。单叶；单叶对生；主脉5条；掌状；叶柄长3～5cm。伞房花序顶生 ；花黄绿色。花期在5月，果期在9月。元宝枫树树姿优美，叶形秀丽，嫩叶红色，秋季叶又变成黄色或红色，为著名秋季观红叶树种。弱阳性，耐半荫，耐寒，较抗风，不耐干热和强烈日晒。 元宝枫全身是宝，因翅果形状像中国古代的“金锭元宝”而得名，是我国的特有树种。
