唐宪宗元和年间（806～820）开始流行的诗体专称。有广狭二义：广义指唐宪宗元和以来各种新体诗文。狭义是指元稹、白居易诗中的次韵相酬的长篇排律和包括艳体在内的流连光景的中短篇杂体诗。
元稹贬谪江陵时期，是他诗歌创作最旺盛的时期，也是他“元和体”诗形成的关键时期。
