信号刺激是一种与动物的某种本能反应有固定关系的特殊刺激。用于动物习性学,其含义与条件刺激不同:前者是动物的本能性反应;后者是习得的。多发自动物本身,如动作、姿态、颜色、声音或气味等。如雄三棘鱼肚皮是红色的。背鳍形如三棘,在繁殖季节占据一块领地,遇到同种雄鱼入侵,便以红肚皮对着入侵者,然后头朝下直立颤动背脊朝向人侵者,这是一种进攻的信号刺激,引起入侵者的逃避反应。
