研究人体在体育运动过程中保健规律的一门学科。主要内容包括：体育卫生；保健按摩；体育疗法；体育伤病的预防和处理。主要任务是运用医学保健的知识和方法，对体育运动参加者进行医务监督和指导，使体育锻炼能更好地达到增强体质、增进健康和提高运动技术水平和效果。在古代已有把医疗手段应用于体育运动的记载。体育保健学成为一门比较完整的、有理论基础的学科，是从20世纪30年代才开始的。我国的体育保健事业是在50年代发展起来的。
