价格波动是价格因生产成本和供求关系而上下涨落的现象。商品价格由生产商品的成本和利税构成，价格形成还受供求状况的影响。由于产品生产成本和市场供求关系是经常变化的，这就决定着价格是经常上下波动，而不可能是固定不变的。价格波动有一定的规律性。一般地说，生产成本下降较多，或者供过于求时，商品价格就会下降;相反，在生产成本有所上升，供不应求时，商品价格就会上升。价格的基础是价值，价格总是围绕着价值运动，因而价格的上下波动是有一定限度的。在一般情况下，价格上升，会刺激供给增加同时又抑制需求，所以，价格上升到一定程度后就会停止继续上升，甚至可能会下跌;相反，价格下降，会刺激需求增加同时又抑制供给，所以，价格下跌到一定程度后就会停止继续下跌，甚至可能上升。价格的这种上下波动，形成一种机制，自动地调节着社会供给和需求的均衡，生产和消费的均衡。
