交变应力，又称循环应力、重复应力，是随时间作周期性变化的应力。产生的原因是荷载作周期性变化，或是荷载不变，构件作周期性运动。在应力循环中，如最大应力和最小应力各自维持某一数值的，称为“稳定交变应力”；如最大应力和最小应力随时间改变其大小的，称为“不稳定交变应力”。 交变应力作用下构件的破坏称疲劳破坏，持久极限是交变应力作用下经过无数次变化而不使构件产生破坏的最大应力值，是对构件疲劳强度计算的重要依据，对持久极限的讨论在工程上有很重要的实际意义。
