辛，梵语parivyaya，西藏语 spod（药味之义）。指五种有辛味之蔬菜。又作五荤。与酒、肉同为佛弟子所禁食之物。据大佛顶首楞严经卷八载，此五种之辛，熟食者发淫，生啖者增恚，十方天仙嫌其臭秽，咸皆远离，然诸饿鬼等则舐其唇吻，常与鬼住而福德日销；大力魔王现作佛身为其说法，毁犯禁戒，赞淫怒痴，令人命终为魔眷属，永堕无间地狱，故求菩提者当断世间之五种辛菜。
