佛教典籍中所记载最早出家的五位佛弟子：阿若憍陈如、阿说示（又译马胜）、跋提、十力迦叶、摩诃男拘利。他们原为释迦牟尼佛之父净饭王派遣随侍释迦修道的臣仆，因见释迦放弃苦行，舍之而去。释迦成道后，首次于鹿野苑为他们说法，于是这五人出家，从此便有了最初的五比丘和比丘僧团。
此为薄伽梵所说。五众比丘对薄伽梵之说随喜、心悦。
That is what the Blessed One said. Gratified, the group of five monks delighted at his words.
再者，舍利弗，一个比丘应该如是思省：我是否巳经彻底了解这由于执取而生的五蕴？
Again, Sariputta, a bhikkhu should consider thus: "Are the five aggregates affected by clinging fully understood by me?"
由于没有机会救度他以前的老师，于是佛陀出发前往会遇五位苦行比丘。
Not having the opportunity to save His former teachers, he set out to travel and meet the 5 ascetics.
