书会 原为读书场所，至南宋遂演变为三教之外诸色伎艺人编写话本、戏曲、曲艺之所，故理学家有“风俗便不好”之叹。书会里的编撰者称为才人，大多是出身下层的文人和民间艺人，以在勾栏、瓦舍编写话本、戏曲谋生。据文献记载，当时社会上已有御（玉）京书会、元贞书会、古杭书会、九山书会等。随着宋元话本和戏曲的兴盛，书会不仅初具规模，组织也较严密，而且成员之间已有明确分工，有的就专司掌记之职。
