主物是“从物”的对称。独立存在，与同属于一个所有的他物合并供一定经济目的使用起主要作用的物。如锁与钥匙、船与桨，锁和船都是主物。区别主物和从物的法律意义在于，法律和合同无相反规定时，从物的归属依主物的归属而定，在转让所有权时，从物应随主物一起移转。例如，农民到生产资料公司买拖拉机，生产资料公司在交付拖拉机时，同时也要交付必要的备件。参见“从物”。
