中新世（英语：Miocene，符号：MI）为地质年代新近纪的第一个时期，开始于2300万年前到533万年前，介于渐新世（Oligocene）与上新世（Pliocene）之间。中新世是由查理斯·莱尔所命名的。这个名称来自希腊语μείων（meiōn，英语意为“less”）和καινός（kainos，英语意为“new”）在英语中的意思是“less recent”，即“距离现在还早”因为这时的现代无脊椎动物比上新世少18%。
