中国犀是板齿犀亚科中一个年代较早的大型成员，其化石最早被发现于伊朗，在中国南部出土了更多的化石。是上新世时期中国南方著名的“剑齿象-大熊猫-中国犀动物群”的重要成员，但并没有像剑齿象和大熊猫一样存活到更新世，而是在晚上新世就已经灭绝了。
