中国是一个文明古国，有文字历史已经有数千年。随着社会的发展，我国辽阔的国土上，出现了不少具有相当规模的城市，尤其是历代的国都，因其特殊的地位，更是大兴土木，着意修建。这些古都， 无论在建筑规模、建筑模式或建筑风格上，都有其独到之处，往往表现了同时代最高的建筑水平，对全国其他城市的建筑有特殊的影响，因此可以说，各大古都的建筑沿革史，就是一部较完整的城市建筑史。
