文学史的分期一般与历史学上的分期有一定的区别，文学史中的中古文学，并不一定就等同于历史学上所说的中古时期的文学。当然，在学术界对文学史的分期也存在着一定的争论。按照袁行霈主编的《中国文学史》（四卷本）中的分法，中古文学时期指的是魏晋至明中叶（公元3世纪至16世纪）。其中又可分为三阶段：魏晋至唐中叶（天宝末）、唐中叶至南宋末、元初至明中叶（正德末）。在中国，最早从事中古文学研究并取得一定成就的学者是刘师培，著有《中国中古文学史讲义》。其他国家和地区的中古文学的情况可参照各国文学史。
