个人记忆（Personal memories）：记忆的基本过程是由识记、保持、回忆和再认三个环节组成的。识记是记忆过程的开端，是对事物的识别和记住，并形成一定印象的过程。保持是对识记内容的一种强化过程，使之能更好地成为人的经验。回忆和再认是对过去经验的两种不同再现形式。 个人记忆是相对集体记忆而言。人们回答问题要先经过记忆搜寻，因此是与社团的互动维持了人们的个人记忆。人越是深处于集体记忆的结构中，他记忆的能力就越强。倒过来说，越是离群索居或是与集体记忆割裂，个人记忆的能力就越低。莫里斯·哈布瓦赫认为，一个个人的记忆，必须有集体记忆的大框架的承载才可能被“召唤”出来。
