教会学校的教学内容是“三科”“四学”，合称“七艺”。“三科”：文法、修辞、辩证法。“四学”:算数、几何、天文、音乐。七艺的起源可追溯到古代希腊。古希腊哲学家柏拉图按照 “以体操锻炼身体，以音乐陶冶心灵” 的原则，把学科区分为初级和高级两类。初级科目的体育包括游戏和若干项运动；初级科目的音乐除狭义的音乐和舞蹈外，还包括读、写、算等文化学科。高级科目主要有算术、几何学、音乐理论和天文学。
古希腊人文三艺 (Trivium )：文法、修辞、逻辑；中世纪人文七艺 (Seven Liberal Arts )：文法、修辞、逻辑、数学、地理、天文、音乐。中国《周礼》六艺：礼、乐、射、御、书、数。
