Director of policy for Scottish Renewables Jenny Hogan said onshore wind was "absolutely key" to meeting Scotland's climate change and renewable energy targets.
"The UK has incredible offshore wind resources and this sector will play a key part in improving security of supply and decarbonising our electricity generating system, " said a spokesman for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc).
But unlike other alternative energy sources, such as sun or wind power, there's nothing fickle about the availability of the key raw ingredients--fresh water and sea water.
