Because of this, the historical southwest has always been pushed behind the national consciousness as the “national frontier” and “imaginary state”, or the forefront of reform with the “third line construction” and today’s “western experimental zone”. Like a futurist prototype planted in ancient soil, the reality of the three southwestern provinces is an odd hybrid of backwardness and advancement, superstition and fantasy, history and the future.
