abstract:Welkom is a city in the Free State province of South Africa, located about northeast of Bloemfontein, the provincial capital. A settlement was laid out on a farm named "Welkom" (which is Afrikaans and Dutch for "welcome") after gold was discovered in the region, and officially proclaimed a town 1948; it became a municipality in 1961.
