The Van Allen belts are two doughnut-shaped rings of charged particles-one nestled inside the other-that encircle our planet.

Believer: These 'Van Allen belts', where the Earth's magnetic field concentrates solar radiation, would be dangerous only if people lingered there for several days.

It was what we now call the Van Allen Belt.

By interplanetary space, we are talking about an environment in which space radiation is much more intense than it is in LEO, because above Earth orbit is the geomagnetosphere, the Van Allen belts, which trap charged particle radiation coming from deep space.

The latest problem, according to a new article in Acta Astronautica (we've really been meaning to renew our subscription), is that a space elevator would be so slow-moving (200 kph, or 124 mph) that the half-week spent in the Van Allen radiation belt would kill any living thing without proper shielding.

But Rodgers' side were firmly on the front foot as they went in search of a crucial second, Van der Gun, Morgan and Allen all going close.
