While Sellafield and the Lake District have co-existed side by side successfully for decades, we fear that if the area becomes known in the national conscience as the place where nuclear waste is stored underground, the Lake District's reputation may not be so resilient.
Detailed studies of the surface indicate that these were formed by a lake caused by the flow of underground water that periodically made its way to the bottom of the crater.
The largest underground body of water in Antarctica is known as Lake Vostok, which is 250km (155 miles) long, 40km (25 miles) wide and 400m (1, 300ft) deep.
