Virtually every front-line U.S. weapon from the M-1 main battle tank to the F-14, -16, -18 and -22 fighter aircraft to the AEGIS cruiser and Trident submarine is critically dependent upon foreign-manufactured ceramic packages for its guidance, sensors, command and control or other essential subsystems.
The government says it looked at other nuclear-deterrent systems, including launching adapted Trident missiles from land or ships, or firing cruise missiles from long-range aircraft.
Of course the UK can still rain nuclear destruction with Trident missiles, sustain a deployment of several thousand troops overseas or one of two dozen or so combat aircraft.
