The battery-powered transistor radios introduced by Sony in the 1950s were plagued by yowls and hisses but they allowed teenagers to listen to their favourite music out of earshot of their parents.
These included the original battery-powered pocket transistor radio, launched in 1955, and the first portable solid-state black-and-white television, in 1960.
