The Living Machine works by mimicking one of nature's most productive ecosystems: tidal marshes. Marshes produce more biomass even than tropical rainforests because flow of the tides allows two different types of bacteria to flourish. When the tide is out, bacteria that use oxygen, called aerobic bacteria, can breathe and flourish. When the tide comes in, anaerobic bacteria, which need no oxygen, go to work.
