In some cities, telephone poles not only carry power lines at the top, they carry one, two, or three runs of fiber or telephone cable placed on the poles by the telephone company, the cable company, and perhaps the city itself.
With this the driller can create 4-D images (three dimensions plus time) of oil reservoirs via a seismic vibration sensor attached to the end of a fiber-optic cable pushed down into a well.
